are any of you hikers also photographers?

I find that I'll take alot of pics when I go hiking and want to really apreciate the smaller aspects of Mother Nature.

Do any others treat Nature like a museum when out on a trail or such?

    Lightening,

I know exactly how you feel. I get a lot of "Oh, hurry up" when I stop yet again to photograph something, or even just to look.

Only place I like to move fast and challenge myself is the Billy Goat Trail at Great Falls.

Thank you! Finally someone who appreciates the woods in the same boat as me.

Maybe we should go hiking sometime!

I just find that the leaves, smells, birds, animals, just about anything out in the woods to be positively stunning and even better art than most of the crap that I see nowadays...

Yup, I'm an eco-tourist in the photography sense :) I go caving in addition to hiking, and I slow up the group because I'm taking so many photos. Of course, certain caves/trails might have less to photograph than others, so my speed will vary. I get some mighty fine pictures with my digital Fuji Finepix A330 (I think that's the number) but want to upgrade to something with a better optical lens and more options, like being able to photograph in b&w. Not quite ready to spend the money on an SLR, though :)

Absolutely. My GF and I got along early on because we both believe in hiking in relative silence so as not to scare away all the critters. If you shut your mouth and open your ears and eyes, you experience a lot more.

        So...you didn't get along later on? ;)

i do like to take pictures. i have a few posted in my profile from a trip out west. but i am a little ambivalent about it. my personality and temperment is such that i don't just snap one off, but spend alot of time composing and thinking about the shots. as such, i can sometimes find myself seperated from the nature i am there to experience, by the pane of glass represented by the camera lens. there is nothing worse than finishing a day outside, but feeling like you were watching it all through a window.

so sometimes, i limit myself to a couple of photographic "sessions". the rest of the hike, i just remind myself, "you can never capture and possess this, really. just experience it. let it soak into your bones. and you will carry it with you more surely than any photograph."

I always bring a disposable along with me on hikes.

Now that I'm unemployed (long story, that), I hit the trail four different days last week, and I'll probably keep up that habit. The camera will be there with me.

Since it's relatively close to where I live, and easy to travel to, I usually snap photos on my trips into the Robert E. Lee State Park.

They did have it closed, for somewhere around a year. It reopened I think in the middle of last year, or in the early Autumn. Up until that point, I just climbed around the fence; I didn't have any pets with me, so it was easy enough.

The whole closing fiasco is simply frustrating...after being closed for so long, I saw none of the 'improvements' that were talked about, promised, or whatever. There were still felled trees across the trail in most spots, and the only new signs I saw were the ones mentioning the 'high bacteria levels'. I wonder if there was just a funding crunch they were responding to, and when the fiscal year started over they opened it again. I dunno. And this is dangerously close to rant territory, so I'll shut up now.

I really enjoy taking digital camera with me - bought Canon Elf that is metal encased just for this reason so I am not concerned about damage if dropped. I have some great shots including animated video clips of wildlife with my commentary. I bring back images to share my awe with others.

Nature is a shrine to the goddess - sacred in my mind and I treat accordingly. I have posted some pics from trips on my site.

I love to hike and shoot more in nature than in civilization. I take a lot of pics (you can tell from my profile photos) but I leave certain things to memory as part of the experience. I try to wait and only shoot things that feel so beautiful that I can't pass them without shooting them ( that- don't you dare take one more step- feeling).

Wonderful photos - thanks for sharing. Where was the red rock canyon photo from? US West I guess - looks familiar to many places I have seen in New Mex/Arizona/Utah area.
Mmmushrooms was a great close-up shot. What kind of camera do you have?
