Since we're coming in to the cold season, does anyone have any suggestions on how best to fend off the cold during a hike or camping? Also if you have any hikes that are really good in the winter post them here as well.

Re: Late Fall/Winter Hikes
Wed, November 10, 2004 - 1:19 PMWhen hiking in the late autumn and winter, I have a few simple rules for light day hiking (which I do more often than any other type of hike):
--Keep moving unless you're in the sun or at least out of the wind,
--Bring more food & water than you think you'll need,
--Keep your feet and hands dry, and
--Wear your long underwear.
I've never had a bad experience on the trail ever since I started following those "rules".
As for places to hike, I used to go to Robert E. Lee State Park (just off of Falls Rd. in Mt. Washington) pretty regularly while I lived there. Very nice place to hike in cold weather: perfect for a day hike.

Re: Late Fall/Winter Hikes
Thu, November 11, 2004 - 12:30 PMI know many trails in Baltimore County, so pretty much wherever I feel like going...however if you pick up the NCR trail in the winter and go north...notice the rock formations on your left or right (especially if its cold out, kinda far away), but seeing the frozen water collect on them is really beautiful.
In snow time, I suggest staying away from really steep trails (esp if its icey) or outlook points that are very rocky. Also, make sure that the tread on your shoes are not too worn through...
